New technology will help build talent pipeline for chemistry careers

康宁Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today launched a new addition to its Advanced-FlowReactors portfolio designed to specifically enhance the academic curricula of chemistry-related majors.

康宁NebulaEducation Kits are complete reactor systems that will enable colleges and universities to provide students in chemistry, chemical engineering, and related majors with new technology that is inherently safer than traditional batch reactors. The Corning Nebula Education Kits will provide students a hands-on learning experience to become proficient in flow chemistry and flow reactor operation.

The Corning Nebula Education Kits were introduced at the 2019 China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.

“We created Corning Nebula Education Kits to help develop talent for the pharmaceutical, fine chemical, specialty chemical, and new material industries,” said Yi Jiang, president and general manager, Corning Advanced-Flow Reactor (AFR) Technology Co., Ltd. “Corning AFR is committed to collaborating with universities around the world to give students exposure to inherently safer flow reactors. Our goal is to build a practical and interactive foundation for these technologies in classrooms and labs that could open the door to related careers.”

This new product platform utilizes Corning’s patented heart-shaped, glass fluidic modules paired with feeding auxiliaries, parameter control systems, performance displays, and data acquisition tools. Each unit features a digital interface for easy, touch-based operation and wireless control.

The versatile education kits are available in two versions: one for chemistry students and another for chemical engineering students. The chemistry unit focuses on flow chemistry performance such as reaction route, conversion, selectivity, impurity profiles, as well as the study of flow chemistry operating parameters. The chemical engineering version focuses on the unit engineering aspects of flow reactors, such as flow hydrodynamics, pressure drop, mass transfer, heat transfer, residence time distribution (RTD), kinetics, and scale-up.

“While each version has different performance features, they share the same design and data processing formats so that students can easily switch from one to the other,” said Olivier Lobet, global product design and engineering manager, Corning Advanced-Flow Reactor Technology Co., Ltd. “Students could also benefit from a more visual, connected, and collaborative chemistry and chemical engineering education.”

Advanced-Flow Reactors are an inherently safer technology, enabling the reduced risk of explosion while driving higher-quality chemical processing. They also save energy, help increase the efficiency of chemical synthesis, lower production costs, and reduce environmental impact.

Compared with traditional batch reactors, Corning’s reactors enable at least 100 times enhancement in mixing; 1,000 times improvement in heat transfer performance; and seamless, efficient scale-up from the lab to full-scale production of chemicals for the pharmaceutical, specialty, and fine chemical industries.
