Engineered for automotive applications, Corning® Fusion5™ Glass is the world’s first purpose-built auto exterior glass made using Corning's fusion draw process. It’s designed to help deliver windshields with superior durability, better optical performance, while lighter in weight than conventional windshields.

Windshield Durability

Challenge: A windshield is no longer just a barrier to wind and rain but is fully integrated into the vehicle’s electronic, software, and communication systems. With more features being integrated and mounted to the windshield, such as ADAS cameras, LiDAR, Head-Up Displays, wiper, and humidity sensors, among others, replacement costs have increased by more than 5x in the last decade. Automakers and drivers are looking for a more durable and reliable windshield.

Corning Solution: Windshields including Corning® Fusion5™ Glass demonstrate >4x better sharp impact performance compared to traditional soda-lime glass (SLG) windshields, resulting in significantly lower breakage in the field.

Optical Distortion

Challenge: With advancements in autonomous technology, optical requirements for windshield glass are getting more stringent. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) cameras and other technologies are typically mounted to the windshield, making the windshield optical quality important for the systems to properly function.

Weight

Challenge: Increasing electrification and the adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) has made weight savings more important than ever. A lighter windshield and overall vehicle weight is needed for a longer range.

Corning Solution: A typical windshield is made of SLG/SLG as the outer and inner ply. Corning® Fusion5™ Glass is 12% less dense than traditional soda-lime glass. Replacing SLG with Corning Fusion5 Glass helps save several pounds on a typical windshield.

Glazing Compatibility

Challenge: Typical borosilicate glass has significantly higher bending temperature and lower coefficient of thermal expansion than SLG. This necessitates considerable change in the glazing manufacturing process and makes the use of borosilicate glass in automotive exteriors challenging.

Corning Solution: Corning® Fusion5™ Glass, a borosilicate glass composition, has been optimized for compatibility with existing glazing manufacturing processes. Fusion5 Glass can be readily adopted as a substitute for SLG, while still providing the durability benefits of commercial borosilicate glass.
